History of Cellar Richelle

Mr. Alec McMahon who was the General Manager of the Hotel when it was known as Southern Sun said that in 1985 the cellar was converted to archive storage where they kept old papers. The ponds in front of the hotel and seepage caused by rain plagued them incessantly. After numerous cases of flooding which occasionally almost reached the roof, the archive was removed and the cellar was abandoned as a bad idea.

Compared to past attempts by previous hotel owners, it seems the Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Clubs efforts to stop the water penetration has been the most successful. A small amount of seepage is however inevitable as this room has been in existence since the 1920s and has never been waterproof.

The Riviera on Vaal Hotel & Country Club is the first to make commercial use of the cellar as opposed to past owners who saw it as a problem area.
